ANC Eastern Cape Conference Goes Ahead Despite Legal Challenges

The ANC Eastern Cape is moving ahead with its provincial conference this weekend in East London, despite legal challenges aimed at stopping it. Party leaders like Provincial Chairperson and Premier Oscar Mabuyane and ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula face these issues, along with 1,300 expected branch delegates. This event matters now as the party gears up for local government elections later this year amid internal disputes.

Mabuyane stated the conference starts Friday at the International Convention Centre in East London. He expects 1,300 branch delegates to attend. Mabuyane called the event critical for the party’s future and preparations for local elections.

“So those are the kind of issues we are dealing with. But we are seeing more frivolous disputes; even the litigation itself, looking at it and the issues raised, are chance takers. They are more frivolous as well and are meant to disrupt,” said Mabuyane.

Mbalula confirmed the party will defend its processes in court.

The lead-up to the ANC Eastern Cape conference faced several hurdles. A High Court challenge sought to halt the event. The ANC plans to fight this in court, as Mbalula noted.

“We are ready to prove our case. We believe that everything else that has been presented to us is not factual, but we will prove that in court,” said Mbalula.

At the conference, Mabuyane will compete against his former ally, Provincial Secretary Lulama Ngcukayitobi, for the top position.

These internal disputes and legal threats test party unity. Leaders like Mabuyane say they will not let such issues stop them. The ANC faces local elections soon, so stability matters for its plans.

Mabuyane stressed that the party remains focused despite the challenges. Court battles could pull attention from key preparations.
