Our Platinum business mines, processes and refines the entire range of platinum group metals (PGMs): platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium. We are the world’s leading primary producer of PGMs, which have a range of specialised applications that improve lives across the world – from vehicle fuel cells to jewellery; dentistry to glassmaking; pacemakers to petroleum refining.

You will be responsible in providing high level and specialist Rock Engineering services and expertise within this 3-5 shaft mining operation with increasing mining complexity, variable conditions and aging infrastructure.

The focus for this role will be to:

• Develop/contribute to tactics and plans for mining at increasing depth and to combat increased seismicity inferred from multiple observations and measurements in current mining.
• Set and assure compliance to Rock Engineering systems, policies, protocols and standards.
• Participate in industry technical forums and liaise with external parties (e.g. local government, other mining companies).
• Benchmarking the state of rock engineering practice in relation to established best practice (technology) within a Mechanised and Conventional mine.
• Review and sign off layouts, mandatory codes of practice and rock engineering related systems and investigate opportunities to optimize efficiency and cost, driven by rock engineering input.
• Conduct and sign-off geotechnical modelling for Mine design and layout purposes and contribute to feasibility studies for new on-mine projects.
• Provide input into the ore flow statement, mining, ventilation and other related disciplines as well as assisting with planning (LoM, 5-year, 1-year, monthly).

This role is in the MRM department on a Band 6 level, reporting to the Mineral Resource Manager.

You will be required to have: 

• Mining or Geology Degree (4 years) or equivalent.
• Legal requirement: Chamber of Mines Rock Mechanics Certificate.
• Advance Rock Engineering Certificate would be advantageous.
• Member of South African Institute of Rock Engineering would be advantageous.

Experience required:  

• Extensive experience in managing a team of qualified rock engineering/strata control staff.
• Post qualification experience in mining rock engineering (8 years).
• Intermediate Computer literacy in Microsoft Office.
