3 Year N-Diploma Course in Sound Technology
Course Description
The Diploma course is an occupational & vocational training program that is structured to train the learner as an effective Sound & Music Professional. This qualification is aimed at giving the learner technical, theoretical and practical knowledge required in professional recording studio and live Sound environments.
The Design of this 3 year qualification will enable the learner to progressively obtain 3 different certificates by Completing the N4, N5 and N6 after which. This together with the 18-month practical component will then lead to the N-Diploma at NQF Level 6.
This qualification enables the learner to be employed within the Music/Audio industry as Sound technicians, Music Producers and Studio Engineers, Live Sound Engineers and Monitor Engineers.
Duration
18-month of lectures presented at CAE Institute, which will be integrated by an 18-month practical component.
About this program
This program follows a nationally set curriculum exposing students to an intensive audio diploma that covers every facet of music and audio production by means of a hands-on, learn-by-doing approach. Professional and experienced lecturers will train students in the full range of audio engineering and music production skills, including recording and mixing.
This program includes training in both lecture rooms and hands-on studio environments on the CAE premises, which is fully equipped with professional studios and live sound facilities. Your experience as a learner at CAE Institute will also include visits to other recording facilities and live Sound venues.
This Diploma course covers a wide range of audio disciplines, which will equip the learner with all knowledge and practical experience to be an asset for any audio industry nationally or internationally. During the program students will also be exposed to recording their own album and furthermore gain insight and knowledge of how to set-up their own recording studio.

Software digital audio workstations used (DAWS):
CAE Institute makes use of the latest versions of the following digital recording and production software:
- Studio One
- ProTools
- FL Studio
As a registered learner at CAE Institute, learners receive a substantial discount on all the above Digital Audio Workstations (DAWS). This is encouraged for learners to work on the DAW at home as well.
CAE also assists learners with other recording and live sound equipment. This would include things like microphones, audio interfaces, mic stands, pop-filters etc.
Learners are also advised to purchase their own personal headphones.
Certification on successful completion of studies
Students write national examinations, which is administered by the QCTO.
Successful students will achieve the following:
National Certificate: Popular Music and Studio Work (N4)
National Certificate: Popular Music and Studio Work (N5)
National Certificate: Popular Music and Studio Work (N6)
National Diploma: NQF Level 6: Popular Music and Studio Work (issued on completion of N4–N6 and 18 months relevant work-based training) *
- Once students have successfully achieved all three N4 – N6 national certificates and have been exposed to work-based for 18 months or 2000 hours period in a sound recording / sound engineering environment, will be entitled to receive the highly respected National N Diploma in Popular Music: Studio Work.

2023 Sound Engineering National Certificate Course – 1 Year

The Sound Engineering National Certificate is a full-time course which starts 14 February 2023. It will be an accredited course then and a grade 12 certificate will be a requirement. Please speak to us if you do not have grade 12 certificate. This course includes all the tools you need to become a successful sound engineer with great employment opportunities. CAE is celebrating it’s 25th year in Sound Engineering education and has provided many young people with job opportunities through our industry partners.
Introduction
This course provides students with the necessary foundation, understanding and skill to work in the Audio Engineering job market and to study further.
