Details of D’Arcy McGee Beacon Fellowship Program
Applications are open for the D’Arcy McGee Beacon Fellowship Program 2021. This program enables leading Irish and Canadian academics, researchers and thinkers to connect online, in a program of activity designed to nurture and develop strong and fruitful collaborations which will enrich connections between the two countries.
Under this program;
- Canadian universities (and similar organisations) are invited to apply to ICUF, in order to host an Irish Beacon Fellow.
- Irish universities (and similar organisations) are invited to apply to ICUF, in order to host a Canadian Beacon Fellow.
Both host universities & Beacon Fellows receive a financial award on successful application.
These Fellowships will have a three-step approach:
- Step 1 – Lecture: The Beacon Fellow delivers an online lecture (20 -40 mins, 15+ minutes Q&A) to a group of 50+ in the host university in the host country.
- Step 2 – Small group events: The Beacon Fellow gives a series of smaller more focused online events to a smaller cohort of 5-10 people in the host organisation.
- Step 3 – wider online dissemination: A recording of the lecture will be shared to the ICUF website for public viewing, and will be publicised via the ICUF mailing list, Twitter, LinkedIn and other channels.
Fellowship
- Canadian Fellowships: Canadian Beacon Fellows will receive an award of CAD 4,000, and CAD 900 per smaller group event. The Irish host organisation will receive a Beacon Host award of €2,000.
- Irish Fellowships: Irish Beacon Fellows will receive an award of €2,500, and €600 per smaller group event. The Canadian host organisation will receive an Beacon Host award of CAD 3,000.
Eligibility
- Open to Irish and Canadian academics, researchers and thinkers;
- Beacon Fellows should be leading thinkers in their field. It is not necessary that Beacon Fellows come from an academic background.
- It is anticipated that host organisations will generally be third level educational institutions, such as universities. However, applications are welcome from all organisations that have the potential to develop links between Canada and Ireland, in ways consistent with the mission of ICUF.
- Beacon Fellows must be permanent residents of either country. An Irish host organisation can only propose a Beacon Fellow who is resident in Canada. Similarly, a Canadian host organisation can only propose a Beacon Fellow who is permanently resident in Ireland.
