National Senior Certificate NSC June Exams 2026, eligibility, and what to do if you do not qualify to write the June NSC examination 2026.

The supplementary examination in February/March has been phased out and is therefore no longer available.

A new examination is available during May/June where candidates can improve their results or complete outstanding results.

  • Electronic registration (e-Registration) for adults planning to write the June 2026 Senior Certificate examinations is available to candidates from all provinces. The open period for e-registration is from 01 October 2025 until 6 February 2026.

National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examinations

The  National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations commonly referred to as “matric” has become an annual event of major public significance. It not only signifies the culmination of twelve years of formal schooling but the NSC examinations is a barometer of the health of the education system.

The first national examination, under the newly elected democratic government was administered in November 1996, following a highly decentralized approach.

NSC JUNE Exams Eligibility

  • Candidates can only register for subjects which they were registered for in any previous November examination.
  • Candidates who were absent with a valid reason (medical unfit, death in the immediate family or other special reasons*) from one or more external question papers, may register for the NSC June examination, provided they have valid external paper marks (PAT, Oral and SBA).
  • Any NSC candidate (who wrote exams from 2008 November onwards) who wants to improve their overall achievement status, or only wants to improve the achievement of a subject, may register for the NSC June examination.
  • In the case where a candidate was absent for one or more papers in the November exam with a valid reason, the candidate has to write all the papers for the registered subject(s).
  • In a case where an irregularity is being investigated, provisional enrolment for NSC June examination may be granted to the candidate concerned, pending the outcome of the investigation.
  • Candidates who did not write or complete one or more of the NSC November examination question papers for reasons other than illness/injury or death in the family, may also apply to write the NSC June examination, provided they have valid external paper marks (PAT, Oral and SBA).
  • Result queries should be submitted for investigation within 30 days after the release of results.
  • Candidates must ensure that names and identity numbers reflect correctly on their statement of results and report any required corrections to the Department before 30/08/2024.

What to do if you do not qualify to write the June NSC examination

Candidates, who do not qualify to write the June NSC examination, have the following options:

  • Re-enrol for the NSC as a full-time repeater candidate at a school without delay, provided that the candidate is younger than 21 years of age. Candidates need to enrol for 7 subjects(including Life Orientation) and have to comply with all SBA requirements.
  • Register as a part-time repeater candidate at a Public Adult Education Centre.
  • Register for the Senior Certificate (SC) examination which is a school leaving qualification for adults and out-of school learners who are above 21 years of age.
  • Alternatively, candidates that were not successful in their examinations could consider vocational education and training. There are 50 Public Further Education and Training (FET) colleges across all provinces of South Africa comprising over 300 campuses or teaching sites.

How To Check NSC Results

There are various ways you can use to access your grades. You do not need to be near your school or a government education office to get them. Below are a few ways you can easily get your exam marks.

Some results may not be available because of technical issues.

  • Candidates are urged to get their statements of results from their school/centre where they wrote the exams. Candidates’ results will also be available on this website.
  • Result queries should be submitted for investigation within 30 days after the release of results.
  • Candidates must ensure that names and identity numbers reflect correctly on their statement of results and report any required corrections to the Department.

RE-MARK/RE-CHECK OF EXAM SCRIPT

A candidate may apply at the prescribed fee for the re-mark/re-check of his/her examination scripts. Registration can be done at either the school or district office in the province or online at www.eservices.gov.za (all instructions appear on the reverse side of the Statement of Results).

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is providing an online service for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) candidates to request a re-mark or re-check of examination scripts.

This online service will support the current manual process in order to enhance DBE service delivery to candidates.

Access and registration process:

In order to request for a re-mark or re-check service, candidates must first register on the e-Gov portal at www.eservices.gov.za to create a personal account. This account will allow the candidate to login using their password and usernames to access the service. Candidates who have already made use of the online e-Registration do not have to create a new personal account, but they should use the same account to access the e-Gov portal.

Information also appears on the reverse side of the Statement of Results.

Support process:

The following support options are available to provide assistance to the candidates:

  • An “Online Help” is available to guide candidates on how to request a service using the system;
  • An e-Gov Support Helpdesk for application assistance; and
  • “Contact Us” when candidates require DBE assistance.
