Programme Overview

This project is part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP Phase 6). It focuses on digitizing, preserving, and managing national archives at the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa (NARSSA) in Pretoria, Gauteng. Unemployed youth aged 35 or younger can build skills in a government setting. Applications close on 08 April 2026.

Available Positions

The program has more than 20 roles across categories like archiving, audio-visual work, administration, IT, and entry-level tasks. Here are the main groups:

Archivist Roles

  • Archivist: Arrangement and Description (15 posts): Organize and describe archive materials. Needs a diploma or degree in Archival Studies or a related field.
  • Archivist: Outreach and Publications (2 posts): Handle public outreach and publish archive info.
  • Archivist: Oral History (2 posts): Record and preserve oral histories.

Assistant Archivist Roles

These include Reading Room, Cartographic Material, Strong Room Registers, and Sensitive Records. Most need Grade 12 or a relevant qualification.

Audio-Visual Preservation Roles

  • Film & Video Preservation Assistants
  • Sound Preservation Assistants
  • Legal Deposit Audio-Visual Assistants

Require a diploma or degree in Film, Engineering, Audio Production, or similar.

Administration and Records Roles

  • Administration Officer
  • Records Management Officer
  • Sensitive Records Admin Officer

Need a diploma or degree in Public Administration or related.

Driver-Based Role

  • Maintenance Officer: Needs qualification in the built environment.

Minimum Requirements

All applicants must be South African citizens, unemployed, and 35 years old or younger. They also need to meet the specific needs of the role they choose.
