PLEASE NOTE: Due to Covid-19 restrictions the selection processes are under review and may be subject to change. You will be informed of the necessary requirements for selection by the Central Applications and Admissions Office.

North-West University (NWU) Types of Selection

  • Paper / Academic selection: Selection is done on the academic achievement of Gr 11 (final) or Gr 12 (June or final) results. The best candidates are selected. Average performance is also taken into account.
  • Faculty selection

  • Closing dates:
    • Music: 31 August 2020 (Also apply for an audition before the closing date)
    • Graphic Design: 31 August 2020
    • Engineering: 30 September 2020
    • Urban and Regional planning: 30 September 2020
    • All other selection courses: 30 June 2020

North-West University (NWU) Faculty selection

Law (LLB, BCom Law, BA Law)

    • Selection consists of the gr.11 marks (or gr.12 if available) and an online questionnaire.
    • Applicants must complete the online questionnaire by 20 July 2020.
    • Results of the selection will be made known by August.

B Social Work

    • Initial selection consists of gr.11 marks or available gr.12 marks and an online questionnaire.
    • The online questionnaire must be completed by 20 July 2020. First screening will be completed by 5 August. The invitation for final selection will be sent to successful candidates and will take place in September. These candidates will complete a psychometric assessment.
    • September exam results must be forwarded to selections@nwu.ac.za when available. Please state that the application is for Social Work and include your student number.

Urban and Regional Planning

    • Selection consists of the gr.11 marks (or gr.12 if available), an online questionnaire, and an interview with an Urban Planner.
    • The online questionnaire must be completed by 20 July 2020.
    • The interview with an Urban Planner document must be completed and submitted by 30 November 2020 (with the possibility of extension until registration).
    • Select candidates may be asked to complete a psychometric assessment.

BHSc in Occupational Hygiene

    • Selection consists of gr.11 marks and/or gr.12 marks available before the closing date.

The best candidates according to a ranking system based on results will be selected. Successful candidates still need to meet the minimum requirements in January 2025. Unsuccessful candidates may ask to be re-evaluated after the September exam results become available.

BCur Nursing

    • Selection consists of gr.11 marks and/or gr.12 marks available before the closing date, job shadowing and a questionnaire.
    • Job shadowing is no longer compulsory for 2020. The questionnaire must be downloaded from the webpage of the School for Nursing and emailed to Bernice Mokele at Bernice.mokele@nwu.ac.za.

B Consumer Studies

B Consumer Sciences:

    • Sciences in Food Product Management
    • Sciences in Fashion Retail Management
    • Selection consists of gr.11 marks and/or any available gr.12 marks.
    • The best candidates according to a ranking system based on results will be selected.

BA Graphic Design

    • Selection includes a portfolio to be submitted. Enquiries about the portfolio and closing date can be made to Zita Kyster  (zita.kyster@nwu.ac.za / 018 299 4091)

BSc Dietetics

    • Selection consists of gr.11 marks (or gr.12 if available), a telephonic interview and a visit to a Dietician.
    • Telephonic interviews will take place during August 2020.
    • The discussion with a Dietician may be conducted telephonically while in lockdown to prepare for the actual interview. Once we reach level 1 the required visit still needs to take place. Prospective students will have time until 15 January 2025 to hand in proof of visit.

BPharm (Pharmacy)

    • Selection consists of gr.11 marks and/or gr.12 marks available before the closing date.
    • The best candidates according to a ranking system based on results will be selected. Successful candidates must still meet the minimum requirements in January 2025. Unsuccessful candidates may ask to be re-evaluated after the September exam results become available.

Biokinetics

    • Selection consists of gr.11 marks (or gr.12 if available).
    • The best candidates according to a ranking system based on results will be selected.

Diploma in Coaching Science

    • The selection consists of gr.11 marks (or gr.12 if available).
    • The best candidates according to a ranking system based on results will be selected.

BHSc with Human Movement Sciences

    • The selection consists of gr.11 marks (or gr.12 if available).
    • The best candidates according to a ranking system based on results will be selected.

Music [BA Music & Society; Diploma in Music; BMus (Music)]

    • The selection consists of an audition and written paper
    • Auditions take place at the end of August 2020. This will be confirmed once the lockdown levels allow for travel between provinces.
    • The online application form for auditions is available online at http://humanities.nwu.ac.za/music/application-guide/ and must be completed by 31 July 2020.

North-West University (NWU) Courses that require selection test

Selection is done on the basis of academic achievement based on Gr 11 or Gr 12 marks as well as a psychometric assessment. The psychometric evaluation includes personality, aptitude, and other questionnaires, as required by the specific studying direction.

Some courses also require subject-specific tests such as Mathematics or Chemistry and Physics. When appointments are made for the tests, students will be notified if they also have to write subject-specific tests and what to study for these.

Theology

    • The selection consists of gr.11 marks (or gr.12 if available) and a psychometric assessment.
    • Psychometric assessments will be conducted on the NWU campuses and will be scheduled on an individual basis as and when travel between provinces is allowed.

Candidates who are required to write a selection test will be informed by the Central Applications and Admissions Office and will be able to book by following the instructions provided.

Engineering

After you have submitted your application, you will receive a letter informing you whether you meet the criteria to be subjected to the selection process.

As soon as you have received the letter (issued by the CAAO / Admissions Office), you may contact the Faculty of Engineering for an appointment to write the Engineering Test. Read more about the selection process for Engineering and find all the available dates for the Engineering test.
