Overview of Palabora Mining Bursary Program
If you are successfully enrolled with a University you can apply for a bursary.
A bursary is a monetary award made by any educational institution or funding authority to individuals or groups. It is usually awarded to enable a student to attend school, university, or college when they might not be able to, otherwise. Some awards are aimed at encouraging specific groups or individuals into the study.
Palabora has been established in 1956 and is South Africa’s only producer of refined copper. Palabora is listed in the JSE producing about 60,000 tonnes of refined copper per year. The company’s origin comes from the formation known as the Phalaborwa Complex which hosts minerals such as copper, carbonatites as well as other minerals such as phosphates, vermiculite, phlogopite, magnetite, nickel, gold, silver, platinum and palladium also occur.
Palabora Mining operations include underground mine, concentrator, smelter, refinery and vermiculite operations. It has a wide range of products primarily copper with its by-products as well as anode slimes, sulphuric acid, magnetite, nickel sulfate and vermiculite. The company has also a laboratory that offers services such as sample development, routine analysis, fire assay, quality assurance systems and research and development.
Palabora Mining Bursary Application Details 2022-2022
Bursaries will be awarded to students within pursuing mining-related degrees such as Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering and Science.
This bursary will cover tuition fees, accommodation costs and personal allowance of R5000 for University candidates and R4000 for Technikon candidates. Grantees are required to perform vacation work during university holidays as well as partake in a service contract with Palabora Mining.
Bursaries are renewable every year which will depend on the bursary holder’s academic performance.
