Details of Pulliam Journalism

Applications are open for the Pulliam Journalism Fellowship 2020 for US College Students and Graduates. The Indianapolis Star and The Arizona Republic, Gannett Co. newspapers, are seeking college students and new graduates with a talent for reporting, news design and graphics, or photojournalism for an exciting and demanding journalism fellowship program.

The Pulliam Journalism Fellowship offers mass media students real-world experience working with journalists, photojournalists, and editors in an urban newsroom.

The Fellowship is named after Eugene C. Pulliam, who was an Atchison, Kansas, native and graduated from Baker Academy, a preparatory school associated with the university, in 1906. Pulliam started his career as a reporter for the Kansas City Star and enjoyed a long career as a newspaper publisher, acquiring nearly 50 papers across the United States. He founded Sigma Delta Chi with fellow student journalists at DePauw University. The newspaper fraternity became the Society of Professional Journalists.

Eligibility

  • Open to US college juniors, seniors and graduate students enrolled in a journalism or related degree program as of November 1, 2020.
  • Previous newspaper journalism internships and/or experience as a journalist on a college newspaper are preferred.
  • You need to be committed to a career in news journalism.
  • You must have reliable transportation and arrange for your own housing.

Application

Applications must comprise the following:

  • A completed online application form.
  • Samples of your best published work, at least half of which completed under deadline.
  • A resume.
  • One letter of recommendation from someone who knows the most about you and your work, such as an editor, supervisor, teacher or colleague.
  • Two professional references who can speak about your work as a journalist.
