Overview of SUBTROP Lindsey Milne Bursary Program

A bursary is a monetary award made by any educational institution or funding authority to individuals or groups. It is usually awarded to enable a student to attend school, university, or college when they might not be able to, otherwise. Some awards are aimed at encouraging specific groups or individuals into the study.
The South African Subtropical Growers’ Association (Subtrop) is an association that aims to promote the farming, marketing and distribution of avocados, mangoes and litchis. Subtrop also provides services to its member associations such as management, liaison, market, technical and economic information, market development, research coordination and market access initiation.
Subtrop comprises of South African Avocado Growers’ Association (SAAGA), The South African Mango Growers’ Association (SAMGA) and the South African Litchi Growers’ Association (SALGA). These associations are open to growers membership from small-scale to large-scale operations.
Subtrop’s head office is located in the Limpopo town, Tzaneen. There are also satellite offices throughout the subtropical regions of South Africa to make sure that proper services are provided to growers.
SUBTROP Lindsey Milne Bursary Application Details 2022/2023
Subtrop’s Lindsey Milne bursary scheme was founded and is named in honour of Dr DL Milne with his contributions to the subtropical fruit industry. Dr DL Milne served as an employee of the Institute for Tropical and Subtropical Fruit, as General Manager of Westfalia and as Chairman of the Subtrop group after his retirement.
The Lindsey Milne bursary scheme aims to support students who wish to continue a career in the Subtropical fruit industry in South Africa. The financial assistance will be granted to students studying towards a BSc (Agric) degree, with those majoring in Horticultural Science or Agricultural Economics will be given preference. The bursary programme is good for a period of one year, but is renewable based on the bursary holder’s academic results. The value of the bursary depends on each individual case and will be reviewed annually.
Bursary holders will be required to center their seminars and projects on subtropical crops such as avocado, mango and litchi, where ever possible.
After completion of studies, bursary holders will be required to work for Subtrop equivalent to the duration of the bursary given, as long as employment is available. Subtrop has no obligation to provide work opportunities for bursary holders however, assistance may be provided with members the various growers’ associations.
In the event of a bursary holder failing the course for which the bursary is awarded, the bursary amount must be paid back equivalent to the length of the bursary already given.
