Johannesburg Demolishes House in Tladi to Start Power Project
Officials in Johannesburg demolished a house in the Tladi informal settlement. This step enables the start of the Tladi power project, bringing electricity to over 150 residents who have waited years. The move also clears road blocks that stopped ambulances and police, making it a key fix right now.
The City of Johannesburg’s Human Settlements Department confirmed the demolition. They said it removes the last barrier to installing a transformer. Now, electrification work can begin under the Informal Settlement Upgrade Programme.
Joburg MMC for Human Settlements, Mlungisi Mabaso, issued a warning. “If you stand in the way of our development, we are going to deal with you one way or the other,” he said. “We cannot allow one person to hinder the work that we are doing.” The department attributes this action to progress for the community.
Residents in Tladi faced years without stable electricity. The demolished house also blocked the road. Ambulances and police vehicles could not pass through, according to locals.
People in the area look forward to reliable power. A similar demolition in Soweto drew celebrations from residents there. Tladi’s community shares that hope now.
Resident Thandi Tshabalala spoke about the change. “We are happy that after all these years, we can finally get electricity,” she said. “The house was also obstructing the road; ambulances could not go in and police vehicles could not pass.” She added that it restores the community’s dignity.
The project shows the impact of public works. Officials stress that no single person can block efforts for many.
The department expects the Tladi power project to finish by September. More than 150 residents will gain electricity then.
