Programme Overview

Position Purpose
As a Trainee Train Assistant, your main job is to work with the Train Driver. You will help operate trains so cargo arrives on time and undamaged. This includes tasks like preparing locomotives, shunting wagons, and following safety rules every step of the way.
Key Responsibilities
Trainees handle several daily duties. You will prepare locomotives and run brake tests before trips. During operations, you assist with shunting and use radios or telemeters for communication. You must watch train movements, follow safety rules, and help in emergencies. You will also fill out train journals and keep work areas safe.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify, you need a Grade 12 certificate with Mathematics and/or Physical Science. You must be at least 21 years old and at least 1.6 meters tall. Good physical fitness is key, including sharp hearing, vision, and mental health. You should be able to lift heavy items and pass psychomotor tests using the Vienna Testing System. Be ready for shift work and regular medical checks.
Training Requirements
The programme includes full theoretical and practical training. You must finish it all to get certified as an independent Train Assistant. This ensures you can handle the job safely on your own.
Skills and Competencies
You need basic knowledge of train rules, safety steps, locomotive parts, and rail routes. Key skills include handling trains, shunting, observing details, coordinating with others, solving problems, and communicating well. You should manage time, handle stress, stay safe-focused, show up on time, and work under pressure, including shifts.
