A Matric Upgrade is a perfect choice if you are looking to improve your matric results. Upgrading your matric means that you will improve your marks. The decision is yours, upgrade as many subjects as you like or choose a new set of subjects.
How To Upgrade Matric Result
If you are not happy with your matric results, you can upgrade them. To upgrade your matric results, you register on the Adult Matric program. Once you have improved the subjects you want to upgrade, you apply to Umalusi to combine your two sets of matric results.
Umalusi will then issue you a single, final Matric Certificate, with only your best results showing on that new Matric Certificate.

You can even use the matric upgrade to upgrade your results if you fail matric. So you can upgrade from a fail to a pass in matric.
To upgrade your matric results, you can:

Improve your results by retaking subjects or adding new ones:
- Register for the Matric Upgrade program at any time of the year
- Choose the subjects you want to improve
- Study for the exams using the textbooks and study materials provided
- Register for the exams with the Department of Basic Education (DBE)
- Write the exams in May/June or October/November
- Umalusi will combine your results and issue you with a Matric Certificate
Second Chance Matric Support Programme
Rewrite subjects if you didn’t meet the minimum requirements or need to pass no more than two subjects
Recheck or Remark
Have an examiner recheck your answers or go through your entire paper:
- Register at the South African e-services portal
- Click on the Education icon
- Pay R29 per exam to recheck or R120 per subject for a remark
You can register for the Matric Upgrade program online or in person:
- Online: Visit the e-Government Portal website
- In person: Visit the DBE offices and fill out the forms
You can also register at any provincial education office, including the provincial head office, the district office, or a circuit office.
