The medal is of bronze, awarded annually and is accompanied by a gift of \u00a32,000. The prize was previously the Royal Society Pfizer Award which was last awarded in 2016.<\/p>\n<h3>Eligibility<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The Royal Society Africa Prize is open to African citizens.<\/li>\n<li>There are no restrictions on career stage and nominations will remain valid and shall be considered by the award selection committee throughout three nomination cycles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Selection Criteria<\/p>\n<p>The Prize is intended for researchers at an early stage of their research career with the potential to build a research project to follow on from the prize.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji td-animation-stack-type0-2\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/13.1.0\/svg\/25aa.svg\" alt=\"\u25aa\" \/>\u00a0The research must be based in Africa.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji td-animation-stack-type0-2\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/13.1.0\/svg\/25aa.svg\" alt=\"\u25aa\" \/>\u00a0The Prize will make a grant of \u00a315,000, including VAT where applicable, to the Recipient for a research project and \u00a32,000 as a personal prize for the Recipient.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji td-animation-stack-type0-2\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/13.1.0\/svg\/25aa.svg\" alt=\"\u25aa\" \/>\u00a0The Recipients must notify the Royal Society of any change in their status or location.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji td-animation-stack-type0-2\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/13.1.0\/svg\/25aa.svg\" alt=\"\u25aa\" \/>\u00a0The Recipients will also be awarded a specially struck commemorative medal and they are expected to receive the Prize in person at a ceremony at the Royal Society, except in exceptional circumstances such as ill-health.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji td-animation-stack-type0-2\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/13.1.0\/svg\/25aa.svg\" alt=\"\u25aa\" \/>\u00a0Nominations can be made by senior academics and members of the national academies of science.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji td-animation-stack-type0-2\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/13.1.0\/svg\/25aa.svg\" alt=\"\u25aa\" \/>\u00a0The project and nominee should be linked with an African centre of excellence, which would normally be a University, or equivalent research centre.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji td-animation-stack-type0-2\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/13.1.0\/svg\/25aa.svg\" alt=\"\u25aa\" \/>\u00a0Normally the Prize is given to an individual who has not yet reached full Professorship status.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"emoji td-animation-stack-type0-2\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/13.1.0\/svg\/25aa.svg\" alt=\"\u25aa\" \/>\u00a0Nominators are required to submit two referees for the nominee.
