NSFAS Funding 2026, How to create a myNSFAS online account, documents needed, who can apply, when to apply, how to apply, requirements, contact details, and other important information are published below.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government student financial aid scheme that provides financial aid to undergraduate students to help pay for the cost of their tertiary education after finishing high school.<\/p>\n

What does the NSFAS funding shot cover?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Applicants who are approved for NSFAS funding are covered for:
\nRegistration fees
\nTuition fees
\nAfter your funding is confirmed, you may also receive allowances for the following:
\n-Food
\n-Learning Material
\n– Personal Care
\n– Accommodation or Transport<\/p>\n

You are encouraged to contact the Financial Aid Office of the institutions they are registered or admitted at to verify if their choice of qualification is funded by NSFAS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who qualifies to take a shot at the NSFAS funding?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You qualify to a get shot of the NSFAS funding if you are a South African citizen or permanent resident who plans on registering or already studying at a public university or TVET college in Mzansi and you fall within one or more of the below categories:<\/p>\n

\u2022 SASSA grant recipients (the SASSA Covid-19 grant does not count)
\n\u2022 Persons whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
\n\u2022 Persons living with disabilities with a combined gross household income not more than R600 000 per annum
\n\u2022 Students who started studying before 2018 with a combined gross household income of not more than R122 000 per annum.<\/p>\n

What supporting documents are needed to apply?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The correct supporting documents are important in ensuring that NSFAS process your funding application in time for your registration at an institution of higher learning. The required supporting documents are:<\/p>\n

\u2022 All applicants must provide a copy of ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted
\n\u2022 Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent\/s, legal guardian\/guardian or spouse must
\n\u2022 Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided
\n\u2022 Proof of income: applicant and\/or parents\/legal guardian\/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide latest payslip not older 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and\/or parent(s), legal guardian\/spouse)
\n\u2022 Passports \/ Driver\u2019s license will be accepted as proof of ID<\/p>\n

NB: No affidavits will be accepted as proof for any funding requirement<\/p>\n

How and where to apply for the NSFAS Funding Shot?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

YOU CAN APPLY ONLINE VIA WWW.NSFAS.ORG.ZA USING A CELLPHONE, TABLET AND COMPUTER. FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS TO APPLY:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Step 1:<\/strong>\u00a0Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the \u2018myNSFAS<\/a>\u2019 tab
\nStep 2:<\/strong>\u00a0Create a myNSFAS account
\nStep 3:<\/strong>\u00a0Click on the \u2018APPLY\u2019 tab and complete the sections on the screen
\nStep 4:<\/strong>\u00a0Upload required supporting documents where applicable

If you do not have a digital devise or access to the internet, do not stress, simply pop into your nearest National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) or Thusong Centre to apply following the same steps.<\/p>\n

I have loaded my ID number, name and surname, but I cannot continue with my application<\/strong><\/p>\n

The system validates all information as received from the Department of Home Affairs. Ensure that you type in your ID number, name\/s and surname exactly as they appear on your ID document or birth certificate.<\/p>\n

Do my documents need to be certified?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, NSFAS has removed the requirement for documents to be certified.<\/p>\n

I applied last year, and I was not approved for funding. Can I apply for 2026?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, if you applied for NSFAS in 2025 or prior years and your application was not approved but you still need funding for 2026, you may apply again if you meet the funding criteria.<\/p>\n

My application for NSFAS funding was approved, but I did not register during the time I was approved for NSFAS. Do I have to reapply for 2026? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. After your NSFAS application is approved, you have a year to register at a TVET college or university. If your NSFAS funding application for the 2026 academic year was approved and you failed to register for a full year, you need to apply again.<\/p>\n

I studied at a TVET college this year but want to proceed and study for a university qualification in 2026, do I need to apply?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. To be funded for an approved university qualification in 2026, you need to have passed and completed your TVET qualification. You also need to ensure that you apply at the university for an NSFAS-funded course.<\/p>\n

How can I apply for funding if I don\u2019t have a cellphone?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To apply for NSFAS funding, you will need a functioning cellphone, a valid cellphone number and your email address. You may also use a tablet or computer. If you don\u2019t have a cellphone, you may use the cellphone of a trusted guardian or relative, but it is best to have your cellphone number. No two applicants may use the same cellphone number or email address. This information is needed to create a myNSFAS account<\/a> which you will use to apply for funding.<\/p>\n

I am not receiving the One Time Pin (OTP). How do I access it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can click on the option to resend an OTP for another one to be sent to you.<\/p>\n

How long does it take for NSFAS to verify my information with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA)?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The verification of your ID number, name, and surname is done immediately when creating your myNSFAS account. NSFAS uses verified details received from DHA. Should your information be incorrect, you will need to contact DHA to rectify it.<\/p>\n

If my parent, guardian or spouse is a taxi driver\/domestic worker\/informal trader, what proof of income should I upload?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Applicant\/students must submit parental details correctly, especially their ID numbers, names and surnames, copies of IDs of parent(s)\/ legal guardian. NSFAS will verify their income against third party data sources (Letter from employer\/taxi association\/ 3 months bank statement)<\/p>\n

What if I have an existing myNSFAS account but I have forgotten my old username, password and cellphone number. How do I reset my profile?<\/p>\n

Follow the steps below to reset your myNSFAS login details:<\/p>\n

STEP 1<\/strong> \u2013 Go to: www.nsfas.org.za, click on \u2018myNSFAS<\/a>\u2019 and then click on \u2018forgot password.
\nSTEP 2<\/strong>\u00a0– Type in your ID number and choose what you require help with: password or username or both and then click on \u2018submit\u2019.
\nSTEP 3<\/strong>\u00a0– The username and the link to change your password will be sent via SMS and email.
\nSTEP 4<\/strong>\u00a0– Open the link and you\u2019ll be redirected to the reset password page.

The closing date for 2026 applications is likely to be December.<\/p>\n

Can students re-apply after withdrawing their application?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Yes, applicants may resubmit after withdrawing their application if they resubmit before the closing date<\/p>\n

For students that have not received any funding decision for 2025 funding applications, does this mean it has not been approved since NSFAS is now open for 2026 and do I need to apply again?
\n<\/strong>\u00a0Yes, these students need to apply again. There is no need to cancel the previous application<\/p>\n

What happens if you are declined for the NSFAS Bursary?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
