This is to inform the general public that the management of the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) has announced the official graduation date, gown collection date, fees, event programs as well as the list of graduands for the WITS graduation ceremony 2025 academic year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
At University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) graduation, Honorary Degrees are also conferred to distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to society, both in South Africa and at a global level. In addition, University Fellowships are conferred on outstanding academics for research excellence as well as The Distinguished Teachers’ Awards are presented to academics for teaching excellence.<\/span><\/p>\n
Graduation is getting a diploma or academic degree or the ceremony that is sometimes associated with it, in which students become graduates. Before graduation, candidates are referred to as graduands. The date of graduation is often called graduation day.<\/p>\n
The graduation ceremony itself is also called\u00a0commencement,\u00a0convocation\u00a0or\u00a0invocation. Normally, the ceremony and name apply to high school and above (the next ascending levels being Associate\u2019s, Bachelor\u2019s, Master\u2019s, and Doctorate)<\/p>\n
Students who are eligible to graduate will receive official invitations to their graduation ceremonies containing details of their ceremony, how to get a gown, and how to organize for photographs<\/p>\n
Graduands will be issued with graduation gowns at their respective student’s faculty office on the week of graduation. All graduation regalia must be returned in time and those returned after the deadline shall attract a penalty fee.<\/p>\n

NOTICE TO ALL GRADUANDS<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
The Senior Executive Team of the University met on Sunday 15 March 2025, and in light of the concerns around<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
COVID-19 decided that all graduation ceremonies for March (19-27 March) been postponed until further notice.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
In the interim, we,\u00a0the University will confer all degrees, diplomas and certificates in absentia.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The Chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand, Dr Judy Dlamini constituted a congregation as per the University\u2019s Statutory requirements \u00a0and conferred the March 2025 graduation cluster degrees, diplomas and certificates on the 25th<\/sup>\u00a0of March 2025 in a closed ceremony.<\/p>\n
Graduands for this cluster will be able to collect your certificates, and a copy of the graduation programme in which your name appears, from our office, located on the 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0Floor of Solomon Mahlangu House, between 08:00 and 16:30 when the University reopens. Academic transcripts will be available for collection from your respective Faculty Office when the University reopens. In the interim students are able to order their unofficial academic transcripts from their\u00a0self-service portal<\/a>\u00a0and, if your require proof of completion of your qualification, please make contact with your Faculty Office who will be able to issue you with a completion letter which should be acceptable to employers under the current circumstances.<\/p>\n

In the event of load-shedding or power cuts during a graduation ceremony, the Great Hall may become totally dark until the generator comes into operation.<\/p>\n

Protocol for graduands and guests<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n
- All graduation ceremonies take place in the Great Hall, East Campus.<\/li>\n
- Each graduand will be allocated two guest tickets.<\/li>\n
- Tickets are collected and academic attire is hired at Robert Sobukwe Building, Room 228 (RS228)<\/strong>. Please note that the collection of tickets, academic attire and taking of photos requires at least an hour of your time, therefore it is recommended that you arrive at least 90 minutes before the commencement of the ceremony.\u00a0Please ensure that you have your academic attire before entering the Great Hall.<\/strong><\/li>\n
- Graduands must please keep their\u00a0graduand ticket<\/strong>\u00a0with them at all times as they need it when crossing the stage.<\/li>\n
- No\u00a0children under the age of 7<\/strong>\u00a0are allowed into the Great Hall and no exceptions will be made.<\/li>\n
- Flash photography<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0not<\/strong>\u00a0allowed in the Great Hall and cell phones must be switched on silent during the ceremony.<\/li>\n
- Kindly ensure that your guests are seated at least 30 minutes before the start of the ceremony. Guests who arrive once the ceremony has started will\u00a0NOT\u00a0<\/strong>be allowed into the Great Hall and will be guided to an overflow area from where they can watch a live broadcast of the ceremony.<\/li>\n
- Vuvuzelas, whistles or any noise-emitting instrument is strictly prohibited in the Great Hall and will be confiscated.<\/li>\n
- In keeping with the formal nature of our graduation ceremonies, we would like to remind you that the dress code is formal and respectable.<\/li>\n
- Inappropriate behaviour towards University staff will not be tolerated and security staff may be requested to remove people who disrupt the proceedings at any stage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Arrangements for Persons with Disabilities<\/strong><\/p>\n
Should you or your guests have a disability and require assistance during the graduations, please make prior arrangements with the Exams and Graduations Office (EGO), in order to be suitably accommodated e.g. blind, wheelchair users, deaf persons requiring sign language interpreting, access to disability parking bays.<\/p>\n
Hearing induction loop system: The Great Hall has been fitted with a hearing induction loop system for direct transmission of announcements over the public address system. To benefit from this system, persons with hearing aids fitted with a \u2018T\u2019 switch, must ensure that the hearing aids have been enabled with the Telecoil setting prior to the ceremony.<\/p>\n
On the day of your graduation, EGO staff at the venue will be available to assist you.<\/p>\n
