Bakithi Kumalo\u00a0(born 10 May 1956) is a South African bassist, composer, and vocalist. best known for his fretless bass\u00a0playing on\u00a0Paul Simon\u2019s 1986 album\u00a0Graceland<\/i>, in particular the bass run on \u201cYou Can Call Me Al\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He got his first job at the age of seven filling in for his uncle\u2019s bass player.<\/sup>\u00a0Kumalo worked as a\u00a0session musician\u00a0in South Africa during the 1970s and early 1980s, eventually becoming a top session bassist and accompanying international performers during their South African tours.<\/sup><\/p>\n

In 1985, Kumalo was introduced to Paul Simon by producer\u00a0Hendrick Lebone\u00a0during the sessions for Simon\u2019s\u00a0Graceland<\/i>\u00a0album. Kumalo traveled with Simon to New York to finish the sessions, and after the accompanying\u00a0concert tour, \u201cspent several years commuting between Soweto and\u00a0New York City\u201d before permanently settling in the United States. Kumalo has toured regularly with Simon since then.<\/p>\n

He has also released several solo records, and continued to perform as a session musician with artists such as\u00a0Joan Baez,\u00a0Cyndi Lauper,\u00a0Herbie Hancock,\u00a0Tedeschi Trucks Band,\u00a0Randy Brecker,\u00a0Grover Washington Jr., and\u00a0Mickey Hart.<\/sup><\/p>\n
