Nozinja is a South African musician, producer and DJ, credited with the creation and popularisation of the \u2018shangaan electro\u2019 genre of African dance music, influenced by traditional folk, Tsonga disco, Kwaito house and township backstreet dance styles from the Limpopo region of South Africa.<\/strong>His real name is Richard Mthetwa and he was born in Gyani, Limpopo.<\/p>\n
He is married to Nyeleti Valoyi.<\/p>\n
Born\u00a0Richard Mthetwa<\/b>\u00a0in\u00a0Gyani,\u00a0Limpopo,\u00a0<\/sup>Nozinja has since moved to Soweto and spent time running a string of successful mobile phone repair shops before noticing the size of crowds at local Sowetan Shangaan dances and becoming the producer, artist, video director and promoter of the Shangaan style for which he is now known.<\/p>\n
Shangaan electro\u00a0was born in Soweto, however takes its name from the\u00a0Shangaan\u00a0people who moved to Soweto largely for work, including Nozinja, also known simply as \u2018Dog\u2019. The \u2018shangaan electro\u2019 sound has found a particular kinship with electronic producers and DJs such as\u00a0Caribou, Ben UFO,\u00a0Mount Kimbie\u00a0and Pearson Sound consistently championing the style. A high-profile series of 12\u2033s on Honest Jon\u2019s capitalised on this with\u00a0Theo Parrish, Rashad & Spinn,\u00a0Ricardo Villalobos,\u00a0Hype Williams\u00a0and others remixing Shangaan tracks, which were subsequently compiled on the \u2018Shangaan Shake\u2019 double CD. 2013 saw the release of 2 brand new Nozinja cuts (under various pseudonyms) on\u00a0Dan Snaith\u2019s Jiaolong label.<\/p>\n
A year after announcing that Nozinja had signed with the UK\u2019s\u00a0Warp Records, a debut full-length album was announced with the title\u00a0Nozinja Lodge.\u00a0<\/sup>The album track list features \u2018Tsekeleke\u2019 which was also released separately on 24 April 2014.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n
