About the AFGRI Apprenticeship Programme

You will gain valuable skills in servicing and maintaining a wide range of agricultural, construction, forestry, and earthmoving equipment. Training Structure and Duration

The apprenticeship journey with AFGRI is approximately three years long. It begins with a six-month probation period, during which both AFGRI and the apprentice evaluate the suitability for a long-term career. This allows for a mutual assessment before committing fully to the program.

Formal training is a key component and includes attending practical training institutes. You will also engage in distance learning through accredited colleges. Furthermore, the program incorporates specialized product training from suppliers and AFGRI experts, as well as internal technical training sessions. Support for this training is provided through AgriSETA and merSETA.

Duties and Responsibilities of an Apprentice

As an apprentice, you will be involved in various tasks that contribute to the smooth operation of the workshop and customer satisfaction. Your duties will include assisting with the repair and maintenance of equipment, performing mechanical servicing, and managing stock control. You will also be expected to provide good customer service, undertake general workshop duties, and participate in technical training activities. This broad range of responsibilities ensures you gain a well-rounded understanding of the trade.

Minimum Requirements for Applicants

To be considered for the AFGRI Apprenticeship Programme, you must meet specific academic and personal criteria. A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate is essential, along with a valid driver’s license. Strong communication and administrative skills are also required, as is basic computer literacy.

When it comes to subjects, English and Mathematics or Technical Mathematics are compulsory. Please note that Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for this program. Subjects that are considered advantageous include Physical Science, Engineering Science, Engineering Graphics & Design, Diesel Trade Theory, and Motor Trade Theory. These subjects can provide a stronger foundation for the technical aspects of the apprenticeship.

Required Competencies

Beyond academic qualifications, AFGRI looks for candidates who possess certain personal attributes. A strong motivation to succeed in the trade is paramount. You should demonstrate attention to detail in your work, as precision is critical in mechanical repairs.
