Who Can Apply?

To be considered for the Capitec External Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Be currently in Grade 12 or have completed Matric in 2025 (on a gap year).
  • Be registered or planning to register for full-time studies in 2027.
  • Be studying at a tertiary institution registered with the DHET or CHE.
  • Be pursuing an NQF Level 7 or higher qualification, such as a Bachelor’s Degree or Honours qualification.

Students pursuing N4, N5, N6, Higher Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, Master’s Degrees, or Doctoral Degrees are not eligible. The bursary is also not open to students at TVET Colleges, Community Colleges, Graduate Schools, Business Schools, or distance-learning institutions like UNISA.

Academic Requirements

  • Grade 12 applicants: Must have achieved a Bachelor’s Pass with a minimum average of 65% or above.
  • Tertiary-level applicants: Must have maintained an academic average of 65% or above for the latest full academic years, including 2025 and 2026 results.

Preference Criteria

Capitec may give preference to applicants who align with the company’s transformation and employment equity goals. Candidates who are on track to complete their qualification within the standard timeframe and are not on N+1 or higher study periods may also be favoured.

Bursary Renewal Conditions

The bursary is renewable each year, subject to academic performance, student engagement, and available sponsor budgets. Receiving the bursary in the first year does not guarantee funding for the entire duration of study.

Work-Back Obligation

Successful bursary recipients are required to work back for Capitec for every year of funding received. Failure to complete this work-back obligation may result in the recipient being required to refund the value of the bursary benefits, plus interest at the prime rate.

Disclosure Requirements

Applicants and bursary recipients must provide accurate and truthful information. If it is discovered that an applicant or awardee is not studying full-time or has undisclosed paid employment, their bursary offer or contract may be terminated. They could also be required to refund all bursary benefits paid to them. This applies to any false statements made during the application, interviews, or after the bursary has been awarded.
