Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for the Capitec External Bursary, applicants must meet several criteria. They must be South African citizens. Applicants can be current Grade 12 learners or those who completed Matric in 2025 and are taking a gap year. Applicants must be registered or planning to register for full-time studies in 2027 at a DHET or CHE registered tertiary institution. The bursary is for students pursuing an NQF Level 7 or higher qualification, such as a Bachelor’s Degree or Honours qualification.
Academic Requirements
Grade 12 applicants must have achieved a Bachelor’s Pass with a minimum average of 65% or above. For students already in tertiary education, an academic average of 65% or above is required for the latest full academic years, including results from 2025 and 2026.
Who Cannot Apply?
This bursary is not open to students studying towards qualifications at N4, N5, N6, Higher Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Master’s Degree, or Doctoral Degree levels. It is also not available to students attending TVET Colleges, Community Colleges, Graduate Schools, Business Schools, or distance-learning institutions like UNISA.
Preference Criteria
Capitec may give preference to candidates who align with the company’s transformation and employment equity goals. Applicants who are on track to complete their qualification within the standard timeframe and are not on N+1 or higher study periods may also be favoured.
Bursary Renewal Conditions
The bursary is renewable each year, provided the student maintains satisfactory academic performance, remains engaged with the programme, and subject to available sponsor budgets. Receiving the bursary in the first year does not guarantee funding for the entire duration of study.
Work-Back Obligation
Successful bursary recipients are required to work back for Capitec for every year they receive funding. If a recipient does not complete this work-back obligation, they may be required to refund the full value of the bursary benefits received, plus interest at the prime rate.
Disclosure Requirements

If it is discovered that an applicant or awardee is not studying full-time or has undisclosed paid employment, their bursary contract or offer may be terminated.
