CRET Bursary Progam 2022/2023 Application Details

The Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation was formerly known as the Shanduka Foundation and was established in 2004 by the Shanduka Group and its founder, Cyril Ramaphosa. The Foundation is an independent public benefit organisation that strives to improve lives. The Foundation changed its name to Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation in 2015.

To achieve social change, the Foundation partnered with Adopt-a-School Foundation, which includes the Thari Programme, Kagiso Shanduka Trust, Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust and Black Umbrellas.

Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation formed the Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET) to support qualified South African students for better employment qualifications. CRET not only look for the top achievers but also for candidates who can show the potential to progress under the right conditions with proper support.

CRET will offer not only financial support but also nurturing, mentorship and psychological and social connection. All recipients will have the opportunity to attent intensive holiday work experience programmes twice a year, for additional soft skills training and networking opportunities. Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust Bursaries

The Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET) is a programme of the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, supports deserving South African learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to continue higher education for employment qualifications improvement. CRET is a non-profit organisation which aims to improve lives and create opportunities through education accessibility and industry growth.

CRET bursary is granted to a duration of no longer than 5 years in the institution accredited by the relevant Higher Education authority. The total value of the bursary varies according to the educational institution’s cost structures and the recipient’s educational expenses. Generally, the bursary will cover tuition, books and other learning materials, accommodation expenses and meals as well as a small stipend for living expenses, dependent on other expenses. The amount allocation for each recipient is capped at a certain value as discussed before signing of Bursary Agreement, which is good for one year. Bursary may be renewed every academic year depending on academic results, commitment to the programme, communication policies, and other criteria detailed in the bursary contract.

After completion of student’s qualification, bursary recipients are not required to work for the Foundation. In addition, CRET have no obligation to provide employment opportunities to the recipients. CRET does not obligate recipients to repay the amount invested for their studies.

CRET Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

  • Unemployed and full-time students of 16 to 30 year old who wish to pursue undergraduate studies at an accredited South African institution
  • South African citizens with a valid South African ID number
  • Registered and accepted student at an accredited institution
  • Demonstrate good academic, developmental communication skills, leadership, high values and empathetic ability
  • Proven financial need
  • Applicants who are students or wish to pursue studies in relevant and scarce skills as determined by the Department of Labour, SETAs and other labour/economic advisors, will be given preference
  • Students in any year of study who do not have a higher education qualification and is not applying for postgraduate studies are eligible to apply
  • Applications for skills development programmes will be considered based on the Bursary Selection Committee requirements and decision results
  • Distance education and part-time students may apply as long as they meet all the requirements and eligibility
  • Recipients of bursaries or funding from other sources may also be considered based on additional need

What does the bursary cover?

Are foreign students eligible for a CRET bursary?

No, the CRET bursary is only awarded to South African students residing and studying in accredited South African institutions. Study abroad or postgraduate study is also not considered.
