EU Border Systems: ETIAS, Eurodac, and EES Progress Update

The European Union is continuously working to improve its border management systems. Following the successful launch of the Entry/Exit System (EES), the EU Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (eu-LISA) has reported significant progress on two other key initiatives: the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) and the Eurodac database. Entry/Exit System (EES) Reaches Full Operation

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a crucial component of the EU’s updated border control strategy. This system records the entry and exit of non-EU nationals who are traveling to the Schengen Area for a short stay. After a phased rollout that began in October 2025, the EES officially reached full operation on April 10, 2026. This means that biometric functions, such as fingerprint and facial image capture, are now active at every external border crossing point for the 29 participating countries. The EES aims to strengthen border security, help manage migration flows, and combat illegal immigration by creating a clear record of who enters and leaves the Schengen Area.

ETIAS Remains Pending with No Set Launch Date

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is designed to screen visa-exempt travelers before they arrive at the EU’s external borders. It will require citizens from over 60 countries who currently do not need a visa to enter the Schengen Area to obtain an electronic travel authorization. Despite progress in other areas, ETIAS is not yet in operation, and no applications are currently being collected. The EU has stated that the specific launch date will be announced several months in advance. Once operational, ETIAS is expected to have a fee of approximately €20 and will remain valid for up to three years or until the traveler’s passport expires. This system is intended to identify potential security risks or individuals who may pose a migration risk before they travel.

Eurodac On Track for 2026 Launch

Eurodac is the EU’s database for the fingerprint identification of asylum applicants and persons apprehended for irregular crossing of the external borders. eu-LISA has reported that the rebuilt Eurodac system is on schedule for its launch by June 12, 2026. Recent advancements include central system releases, the development of a web user interface, and the delivery of technical specifications for Member States. This progress ensures that the necessary infrastructure and tools are in place for the system to become operational. Eurodac plays a key role in the EU’s asylum and migration policies, helping to determine which Member State is responsible for examining an asylum application.

Different Systems, Shared Goal

The EES, ETIAS, and Eurodac are distinct systems, each serving a specific purpose within the broader framework of EU border management and security. The EES focuses on recording entries and exits at the border. ETIAS acts as a pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors. Eurodac supports migration and asylum procedures by managing applicant data.
