The Maize Trust was created in August 1998 to serve the South African grain industry. It was formed after the closure of the Maize Board, acquiring the remaining assets of that Board. Another objective of the Trust is the acquisition, adaptation and distribution of market information for the local maize industry.

Maize Trust bursary is valued at R78 334 per year for MSc students and R94 817 per year for PhD students. Bursary recipients will be required to work in the South African maize industry for a period equivalent to the bursary awarded.
