SASMT Bursary Progam 2022/2023 Application Details

SASMT, South African Society of Music Teachers, is a non profit organisation that represents music teachers. They want to maintain the quality of teaching music in South Africa and increase the development and interest in this profession.

The Ellie Marx Scholarship for String Instruments

The Ellie Marx scholarship is intended for music students who have promising talent in stringed instruments and especially in the Violin. This bursary is awarded each year to a South African student. The value of the bursary is R5000

Requirements

  • You are a SA citizen
  • You are a paying member of SASMT
  • You show talent on a stringed instrument/ Violin
  • You can study locally in SA or Internationally
  • You will need 2 recommendations from 2 different referees. One of them needs to be the head of the institution where you are studying

How to Apply?

There is an application form you will need to sign and complete which you can find on their website. You will also be asked to ad your certified documents and full academic record history.

You will also need to write s short CV and add a photo of yourself (digital format)

Most importantly, you will need to make a video on DVD or Youtube where you show your talent. This video needs to have a declaration from your teacher that it is you who is performing.

If you are the winner of this bursary, you will be expected to perform at the annual SASMT meeting.

The Gladwell Scholarship

The Gladwell Scholarship is for students who are interested in making serious music. This can either be instrumental, composition or vocal. The value of this bursary is R12000. This bursary can be used both for a locally or internationally institution, but it will need to be approved by SASMT.

The value of the bursary will be paid to the institution where you will study in 2 installments. The second installment is dependent of the progress the student is making

Requirements

  • Paying member of SASMT
  • Grade 8 Standard
  • Below 25 years old
  • SA Citizen
  • You will need 2 recommendations from 2 different referees. One of them needs to be the head of the institution where you are studying

How to Apply?

To apply for this bursary, you will need to download the Gladwell scholarship application form. You will need to complete the form and add your certified documents, ID and full academic record.

But more importantly, you will need to record a DVD (unedited) where you perform 3 contrasting works from 2 style periods. You will need a declaration from a teacher that it is you who is performing.

If this bursary is assigned to you, they will expect you to perform at the SASMT annual meeting

The Kathleen Irish Scholarship

The Kathleen Irish Scholarship supports promising piano students at a tertiary level who are financially needy. The value of this scholarship is R12000 which will be paid in 2 installments to the institution/ teacher where you will be studying.

The first installment will be paid at the beginning of the academic year and the second installment will be paid if there is progress made in the evaluation report.

Requirements

You can find the Kathleen Irish scholarship application form at the SASMT website. You will also need to add some certified documents, your ID and a full record of your Academic results. You will be prompted to write a short CV and record and perform on DVD.

The David Reunert Bursary

If you want to become a Music performer on a professional level as a performer or a teacher, you can apply for the David Reunert Bursary. This bursary has a value of R1500.

  • SA Citizen
  • Paying member SASMT
  • Between 18-25 years old
  • National Senior Certificate or Equivalent
  • You will need 2 recommendations from 2 different referees. One of them needs to be the head of the institution where you are studying
