Bursary Overview

The bursary covers a full-time, 12-month study program leading to a Further Education and Training Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement. It starts on 08 June 2026 at the Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell. Applicants receive a monthly stipend of R5 000 to help with living costs.

Training Locations After Completion

Once training ends, successful candidates may work at various traffic centres across the Western Cape. These include Worcester, Laingsburg, Beaufort West, Oudtshoorn, Brackenfell, Somerset West, Vredendal, Vredenburg, Caledon, Swellendam, Mossel Bay, George, and Knysna. Placements depend on department needs.

Minimum Requirements

To apply, you must meet these basic standards. First, hold a Grade 12 certificate. You also need a valid Code B driver’s licence for manual vehicles. Be physically fit, have no criminal record, and be under 35 years old. Avoid visible tattoos or body piercings, though ear piercings are allowed for females.

Selection Process for Shortlisted Candidates

If selected for the next stage, expect several tests. Submit a medical certificate. Then complete medical checks, psychological tests, drug screening, fitness assessments, a driving test, a written exam, and an interview. These steps ensure candidates can handle the job demands.

Key Responsibilities on the Job

After training, traffic officers enforce road traffic laws and promote safety. They control traffic flow, prevent crime, and handle administrative tasks. Officers often work shifts, including nights and weekends, to keep roads safe around the clock.

Strong communication in at least two official languages is key. Show good interpersonal skills, the ability to work under pressure, and confidence. You should handle tasks alone or in a team setting.
