Internship Overview

Graduate Intern: Ecological Technician (Freshwater)
This role is at Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in Stellenbosch. You will help ensure compliance with the National Water Act and conduct audits on Water Use Licenses. Other tasks include assisting with license applications, turning ecological data into databases, supporting freshwater monitoring, and writing technical reports from fieldwork.
To qualify, you need a BSc Honours or MSc in Freshwater Ecology, Aquatic Science, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field. Knowledge of the National Water Act is key, along with experience in SASS5 biomonitoring. Understanding wetland assessment protocols is a plus.
Graduate Intern: GIS Technologist
Located in the Cape Town office, this position involves supporting GIS data collection and verification. You will help with real-time mapping during fire management, convert raw data into GIS databases, and contribute to conservation reports. Mapping and spatial analysis are also part of the job.
Requirements include a degree at NQF Level 7 or higher in Geomatics, Environmental Management, Conservation Science, Biological Sciences, or Ecological Sciences. You should know GIS systems like ArcGIS and QGIS, plus basics of cartography and GPS technology.
General Requirements
All applicants must be South African citizens and recent graduates who have been unemployed for up to two years. A clean criminal record and a valid Code EB08 driver’s license are needed. You must be ready to work in remote field areas.
Key skills include strong organization, analysis, attention to detail, problem-solving, communication, and the ability to work alone or in teams.
